i used to love my aunt taking me places just me and her, without my parents or brother. whether it was out for the day or just to her house. it used to make me feel special and i thought my aunt was fun
Aah now this is my area! I have 5 nieces from 13 to 22 and get on with them all like a house on fire.
I think when they're little, prepare to spend plenty of time with them, give them endless cuddles and be prepared to answer questions, questions, questions. The best thing about being an auntie is that you're allowed to be just that little bit sillier than their parents, which provides the kids with much merriment.
As for older kids, just let them grow up! If you're going to ask them what they're up to, don't judge them when they tell you the truth. Give guidance but don't patronise or insult their intelligence. The more you listen to them, the more they'll talk to you and the closer you'll become!
Enjoy it, you're in for a fun ride! :0)
Its your job to spoil the kids, but don't undermine the parent's authority. Always give your niece or nephew your undivided attention.
Try to have some special one on one time. Plan activities that will help to create memories. Go to the zoo and then draw tigers when you get home.
Read to them and teach them read or tell time.
Practice active listening. Praise and encourage the child often.
