If you are experiencing really heavy periods you should go and see your GP as it could be something more severe.
Heavy periods aren't fun- change tampons and towels regularly.
Hot water bottles and those lillet heat pads work well.
Avoid foods that make you feel worse.
You can take painkillers (can get stronger ones from the GP)
You could also discuss the pill which many women use to prevent heavy periods.- You may have to switch around for a while to find one that doesn't cause any unwanted side effects.
The coil is another option- as already mentioned.
Bananas & Milk really help me with cramps, avoid cheese! I've also gone to my doctors, Tylonal 3 (spelling?) really helps, but it doesn't stop bloating unfortunatly. If you can't go to your doctor (mom not around), you can also get extra strength Advil, it works very well.
To avoid stains from bleeding through for everyone to see, sometimes when its bad, wear 2 pairs of underwear. I know it sounds weird but it works!
When sleeping, I fold up a thick towel underneath so if it does bleed through, you don't have to wash the matress & sheets.
Good luck, and I hope it helps! :)
After suffering for many years with painful heavy periods, I heard a woman on the radio talking about 'mooncup' which is an internal menstral flow collection device, kind of like a diaphram. I found it on-line and used it for the first time this month and for the first time in years I woke up the morning after my first day well rested and with clean sheets. Also, i don't know if it's psycological but the pain has got a lot better too.
I don't know your age, or how you feel about it, but I suffered with horrible periods from an early age and ended up going on the pill at 18. Those little tablets were my absolute saviour and I won't hear a word against them! I gave up taking the pill in my early 40's and after 2 years of being fine, the pain and flooding returned. I've just been fitted with the mirena coil, which is said to almost stop your periods and cut out the pain. My fingers are well and truly crossed! Just a couple of ideas for you...
To help ease suffering I have just started to use a TENS pain relief unit (available from pharmacy's/chemists from about £15) on my tummy when having cramps. It uses low-electrical impulses on your tummy for the pain. It's also been suggested previously to me that ginger alleviates the discomfort, whether you use it as the herb, or have it as ginger wine. The trusty hot water bottle on the stomach is also another favourite.
The alternative medicine route is to go on a course of B12 vitamins. This is not a fast fix, but by the time of your second period you will notice a difference and it gets better by your 3rd. I have very heavy and very painfull periods but I notice the difference when I do take this vitamin. Note for this B6 and a general B vitamin is not the same as an exact of on B12 for some reason
I had heavy periods for a long while, then went on the pill at age 37. After about a year, they became heavy again and I went and had an endometrial ablation. It's like a D & C, they scraped my insides. That was done 1.5 years ago and now I mostly use panty liners when my period comes along. Plus, it only lasts about 3 days, when before it was heavy for 5 days. Such a relief.
I don't know if it would be recommended if you want to have kids; I can't remember that part. I've already had my 4 and have also had my tubes tied years ago.
