You really CAN'T keep it from breeding bacteria but to cut down and kill the bacteria that accumulates, wet it, wring it out and put it in the microwave (assuming that you have access to a microwave) for 30 seconds on the highest heat setting.

Buy some sterilizing tablets, like Milton for babies bottles, and throw all your kitchen bits in (non-metal). It will sterilize the lot, including the bowl.

Put them in the microwave for a couple of sec - this kills off the nasties

I've read that you add a little bleach to water and soak the sponge when its not in use. The bleach should kill any bacteria.

i found that if you soak it in vinegar for 2 hours works very well. (i did this as a science fair project one year.)

Put it in your dishwasher, every time you run the dishes.
