Lightly whip an egg white and smear on the sore area. Let baby lie on a rug until the egg white dries. Then put on clean nappy. Works very quickly.

How to treat nappy rash

Garlic and highly spiced food can cause nappy rash, so keep your baby’s diet as bland as possible

When changing a nappy, try drying the area thoroughly with a hair dryer on the cool setting.

A dusting of Cornflour, and - separately - olive oil, are also brilliant if you have no Sudocrem to hand

Clean then spray sore bottom area with the spray you get for cracked nipples( I think it's Rotacept).It cools and soothes and puts a protective cover on the skin to help quicker healing.

The best cream by far is Conotrane which can only be purchased from a Chemist. Boots don't tend to stock it, visit an actual chemist. You can buy it in tubes or as I do in big round pots (sumx you need to order these). You can also get it on perscription from your G.P as pots tend to be approx £7 per pot. It's fab stuff, nursing homes use it on bed sores & blisters. I've never used anything else on my son and never had a problem. My mum & sister are both care assistants which is how I found out about it.

For my daughter's diaper rash (we call nappies diapers on this side of the pond!) I used the generic white zinc oxide stuff from CVS or Target - slather it on, works fine. A + D ointment also works well.

My son had a touch of nappy rash recently and although we would normally use Sudocreme it can sometimes be too harsh if skin is too sore. The stuff mentioned before, on one of the other tips, from the chemist, a yellow cream, Meta??????? does work very well. Be careful with wipes too, we only use them when we're out and about as they can aggravate nappy rash, cotton wool and water do the job well enough at home.

Avoid using the wet wipe type things too much, while out and about they're useful but they can irritate and cause nappy rash. At home good old-fashioned warm water and cotton wool are better.

Oh, and try not to leave your baby's nappy on if it is wet or poo-ey, not nice!!

On the special baby unit where I work we use vaseline on the babie's bums as a barrier to prevent nappy rash. It works well as its water proof and is good for the babies skin. Clean the babies bottom as usual then Smear a good amount on and popping a nappy on as usual works wonders for our babies!

when my children were little (and that was quite a while ago) I remember using a cream called drapolene, which was very good. But I think that prevention is better than cure . Always wash and dry bottoms thoroughly after each change and whenever possible let them go without a nappy (diaper). lay a large waterproof sheet on the floor put something soft (and washable) on top and let them kick about!
