Please and Thank you should be used automatically, without thinking about it. Children should be spoken to with respect by their parents/carers from birth and that shows later on in their manners. Good manners are essential and, one day, may give you the edge over someone without! As one of the above solutions, treat others as you would wish to be treated.

When you travel by public transport, give up your seat to an elderly person, pregnant woman. You would be suprised at how happy an old fashioned and ignored courtesy can make people. Good manners is about being understated (as distinct from being a walkover) and thinking about other people. If you can assist a parent with a baby and buggy on or off the bus or train that would be good manners also. Its basically treating others as you would like them to treat you if you were standing in front of them
