I had a little fluorescent strip, one with a plug, put just over the work surface near the cooker. It gives enough light to be able to see clearly to make a sandwich and not need to put the main light on. It also gives the kitchen a nice glow and looks lovely from outside.

Turn off lights when you leave a room, unplug your TV or computer at night and doing more outdoor activites can be really useful to help save electricity. During the summer you don't really need lights on and have a look at firebox.com as they have lots of gadgets to save electricity like solar powered chargers etc. These sound like little things but they do add up.

Amazingly your freezer and fridge use much more electricity if there isn't much in there, so keep them as full as you can. You should also defrost your freezer regularly so that it works efficiently.

If you go away in winter you can turn your thermostat right down to only 5 degrees celcius. This is still warm enough to stop pipes freezing and bursting.

Unplug appliances, even the smallest, such as your cell-phone charger, curling iron, toaster, etc. All use electricity when plugged in even if not turned on.
