How to stop your dog jumping up at guests

There are 11 solutions to this problem, click here to sort by highest rated

I talked to my dog trainer, and she said :If your dog jumps up at you, take hold of his paws and get him to walk backwards . When you let go and he drops onto the floor, you congratulate him and offer him a treat. Or, another way is to just bend your knee up so that your knee is onto his chest. push, and he will fall onto the ground. When he is on the ground, then congratulate him immediately.

Only ever stroke or praise your dog when in the sit position. Each time he jumps up at you or anyone else tell him to sit and then stroke him. He will soon learn that if he wants attention he has to behave nicely in order to recieve it.

I talked with a dog trainer about this and she said to squeeze the dog's paws each time he jumped up on you. They learn to associate jumping up with getting their paws squeezed, so they stop doing it.

I saw Oprah last week with this very problem and there was a dog trainer on it who trains through love! (sounds icky but it works!) If the dog jumps up at you turn your back instantly and he should get down. Turn back and ask him to sit and offer him a treat when he does. He'll learn not to jump up in future, even without the treats. It really worked on Oprah's three retrievers!

Practice the following-put a biscuit tin top (like the one from quality street sweets) underneath your t-shirt or sweater and make your dog jump on you. The sound that their paws would make upon hitting the tin top really irritate them and discourage the jumping in the future. A dog trainer taught me thatyears ago when we got our puppy.

Training disk were designed to make a loud noise to distract the dog. You can use a soda can full of pennies if you do not have a training disk and chose to appropriately use this method of training.

When our doorbell rings and the dogs bark like crazy, I use dog training disks which make a loud noise and this stops the barking and jumping up at guests.

Tell your guests to completely ignore the dog. Don't even look at it. It will then get less excited and shut up.

When your dog barks madly at the doorbell, get his attention with a treat.  Once he sees the cookie, throw it into the other room and he’ll chase it, ignoring your guest who’s frightened by the barking.
