Depending on what the wood is and what it's used for (eg Pine dresser, mahogany table) I usually use polish on laquered wood (wood with a coating) and water with a tiny bit of Fairly Liquid for non-sealed wood, rinse then apply oil to the wood to seal.
If you don't want to use a proprietary brand of wood floor cleaner, put approximately a cupful of white vinegar in a bucket of warm water. Wring the cloth or mop well so the floor's not soaking. Buff over before it dries completely, to give a good non-slippy shine
