If going away on holiday, if you feel you can tell your neighbours then do so. Then leave some oldish clothes out on the clothes line - hail, rain or shine. Your neighbours will know what you're up to, but the burglars will just think you're around. They're usually opportunist and won't think to return.
If you have a driveway and you are away in your car on holiday, ask a neighbour if they would park one of their cars on your driveway while you are not there.
Experiment with lights to leave on while you are out (low energy lightbulbs, of course!). Go and stand in the street and look critically at your house. Does it look like someone is home? Choose some curtains to leave half drawn and lamps on - it should look like you are in, but upstairs.
The obvious things I suppose
Lock doors when you go out
Make sure all windows are closed - even small venting ones
Don't leave valuables (eg laptops etc) in full view of windows
Have secure locks on sheds and garages
Don't advertise the fact that you are going away by talking about it too much in public places
Let you neighbours keep an eye on your place and you can keep an eye on theirs
Get one of those signs that says 'Beware of the Dog' and stick it on your back gate, it'll make them think twice about burglaring your house. Also get some plug in timers (most hardware stores should sell them) and set them to turn on lamps and music etc. whilst you're out.
If your garden comes close to your downstairs window plant prickly shrubs. You can get pretty flowering ones with slightly spikey stems. That will help. If not perhaps you can plant window boxes that will deter them its too much effort and woujld draw attention to them tryhing to break in so they will find an easier home to try.
