I have a spare key to my friend's house and a spare to my parent's house. Both have had to be used recently so this idea does work. My parents have a spare key for our house and we keep one on our car keys so we (hopefully) wouldn't be too long locked out.

Always, always keep a spare key hidden somewhere outside. Coming home in the middle of a cold night and being locked out can be dangerous

Give your neighbors a set of keys

place the key under plant pots etc away from the front door-too obvious but somewhere in garden perhaps a overgrown bush
