I think the best solution is definitely sudocrem I know it's meant for nappy rash but the thick texture and the antiseptic in it are really good. Also use arnica cream around the tattoo if you have had it done in a 'boney' place like a shoulder.
The best solution for new tattoos is cream for piles (preparation H). Sounds gross, but think about it - it's designed for soothing itchy inflamed skin. Makes the itching a lot more bearable and moisturises the skin at the same time. I have 4 tattoos and the ones that I used prep H on healed in half the time.
Keep them clean, dry and DON'T cover in E45 - any tattoo artist will tell you that. If you must use something, nappy rash cream is better.
To stop tattoos itching, slap them (or get someone else to if you can't reach!) it makes the skin tingle and eases the itching for ages :)
Having 6 tattoos, the best thing to apply is vaseline and then wrap in cling film. This will stop the tattoo itching as it heals and also stops it from drying out causing the 'scab' to come off, which is how you loose your colour. When you shower make sure you only pat clean and pat dry. Use the vasaline for about 2 weeks or until you notice that all the scabbing has come off of it's own accord (it should be 'wet'. Anything else is just too harsh.
I was told to apply savlon on mine three times a day, it worked! And no matter how tempting it is DO NOT pick the scabs!! I've had mine done for about 8 mnths now and I just put a bit of moisturiser on it now and again now, not a scented one though just a normal plain moisturiser.
after having 23 tatts.. i have found the best thing to use, and its BEPANTHEN cream.. (available in chemists/supermarkets) very light application.. at regular intervals.. works better than anything. vaseline is too thick.. moisturisers are too thin/scented.
I swear by...preparation h-the hemaroid cream! it takes away itching and redness, and really helps. it was recommended to by by a tatooist and another friend separately, and it works a treat!
Definitely Bepanthen! I've used it to take care of my three tattoos, as it was recomended by tattoo artists which I went to in Britain, France and Holland.
Also, avoid wearing too tight clothes over the area the first few days after you get the tattoo done, and NEVER SCRATCH!
