Find a park, nature area, park, field etc and hold a nature treasure hunt. I printed out a page of pictures for the kids to find. Who can find/see the most birds, trees, leaves, animals, flowers, footprints etc. Learning as they go about their environment. The treat at the end being a picnic, ice cream, game of football etc
Take a picnic to the nearest clean beach. Take kites, footballs or frisbees or whatever, build sandcastles and moats, collect shells to decorate the sandcastles, have a paddle, run about - oh roll on holidays!!!! One of the nicest trips to the beach our family had was on Christmas Eve, Rosemarkie, NE Scotland, believe it or not, a cheap and cheerful run out.
you can't beat fish and chips eaten on a sunny summers day in the park or at the beach with your friends or partner.
Follow with a cider or white wine kept cool in a cool bag.
Take rugs or blankets to lie on, some music, some newspapers and magazines...simple but lovely day
We go to Gatwick airport for the day. You can watch the planes look around andthekids love it. You only have to pay for a Mcdonalds for their tea!!!!!!
Bit of a cheat suggestion but take out an annual family membership for the National Trust that way you can visit free to all their properties as many times as you like! Great gardens, lovely houses, cream teas in most and often children activities availble usually at no cost. We've had loads of picnics in numerous grounds of some superb locations with our membership. You can take grandchildren FOC as well! Once took 12 kids for a b'day party!
Go to the park!
Take a picnic filled with all their special and most favourite foods. Take a few barbies for girls or a football for the boys. Bring an umbrella incase of bad weather (remember kids love being stuck in the rain!)
some large restaurants e.g Macdonalds on the outskirts of London and other central cities have large play-areas for kids whilst you eat.
your kids can enjoy the games whilst you have a natter over lunch with friends!
