Sit him down and have a candid talk about the hormones that are ranging through your body. Explain things like your cravings, how you've never really like pickled eggs on toast, but your hormones are dictating how your body should best act, and with so many hormones rushin around, you're bound to have new and difficult emotions running through your system.
I think the best way to make him understand is to sit down together when you're NOT feeling like a mentalist(!) and have a laugh about it. Explain to him that the way you are feeling drives you mad too, but it's short term (you hope!) and his relatively sane partner will be back in the house at some point. Emphasise that any snappishness is not directly aimed at him - he's just the nearest target - but try to explain how fat & unattractive you feel right now. If it provokes a few more compliments and hugs, all the better!
