try using different boolean logic and symbols in your searches. For example searching for car+honda will return seraches that contain car with honda linked to the article. using AND, OR, ANDNOT can also narrow down searches by linking words together. Also quotation marks will search articles for exact phrases. eg "Jonathan Ross" will only display arciles with Jonathan Ross, instead of displaying articles with Jonathan Blue and Ross Gelt

If you would like an easier interface, there is an "advanced search" link on the google page. I gives you tons of useful options like "contains all words," "exact phrase." One of the best is to click the button for "date, usage rights ... ." This allows you to select how old the items returned will be: "past month," "past year," etc.
