Pull the tab on the rubber ring. If that does not work, pull it and introduce a wide, flat screwdriver, and twist. The idea is to let in some air, which will cancel the vacuum seal.

Anonymous clearly hasn't opened many Kilner jars. Sometimes the vacuum seal is so string that pushing on the metal ring will not work. Pulling on the rubber tab, trying to cut through the rubber or brute force are the only answers.

I have no idea what that other poster is on about with "pull the rubber tab"????? Kilner jars have a metal clasp that clamps down on the rim, trapping a piece of rubber to make the seal waterproof. You open the kilner jar by lifting the metal tab upwards and then it unclips.
