How to walk through a dark and quiet alley safely at night
-
It's best to avoid it if at all possible. But if you have to... what I do is carry my keys with each sticking out between my fingers. I also do a fake wave as though someone is waiting for me or has spotted me. I figure that am less likely to be mugged if they think someone has seen me!

..............all of the above but I once read somewhere that if someone attacked you you should pretend you're about to throw up & the theory is that nobody would hang about ..... lets hope none of us have to find out!

There are lots of good suggestions here, but really, if you're concerned about this you should get some proper advice. http://www.safetyforwomen.com/preparing.htm
One thing that stayed in my mind after I read it in a magazine was long hair can be used to grab you or hold on to you, and a ponytail is even worse. Tuck your hair into your collar or similar. Walk tall, be aware, don't worried about offending someone who makes you nervous. Your instincts have grown through thousands of years of other human beings, listen to them.

I heard that it's better to shout FIRE instead of HELP because more people are likely to respond on something that could affect themselves. As horrible as it may sound...

I'd say don't - get a taxi or arrange to walk with someone else.
If you absolutely have to, have a friend on the end of your mobile phone & tell them exactly where you all, & speak to them the whole way along the alley, ensuring that you are aware of anything around you, without being paranoid.
